Product Highlight – Horizon Dog Food

As many of you have noticed, there have been lots of changes going on at All FUR Fun (AFF)! One of those changes is our expanding retail. At AFF we are passionate about animal nutrition and we want to offer the very BEST products for your furry family members! We take the guesswork out of buying food, treats, etc . for your animals by doing the homework for you. We have researched and vetted all of the toys, treats and food that we carry at AFF! We know where all the ingredients come from, where they are processed/packaged and can guarantee that they are free of bad things (like ethoxyquin, BHA, BHG, propylene glycol, to name a few).

One of the newest products that we have started carrying is KIBBLE! Yes, you read that correctly…we carry KIBBLE now! While we are first and foremost proponents of feeding a raw diet, we realize that many of you can’t/won’t for various reasons…and that is okay! You can still provide your dog or cat with optimum nutrition in the form of kibble.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALet me introduce you to HORIZON Pet Nutrition! Horizon is a family owned and operated company in Rothsern, Saskatchewan (the heartland of Canadian agriculture) that has been operating since 2006. You may be asking yourself, why did we choose Horizon? Well, we chose Horizon for a number of different reasons. They are family
owned/operated and they actually own their own manufacturing facility –which means that they have numerous safeguards and quality control systems in place to ensure that your pet gets the SAFEST, FRESHEST and most NUTRITIOUS product! They don’t co-pack! Their safeguards and quality control measures are outstanding because they have never been subject to a recall!

Unfortunately, a number of big pet food manufacturers (which shall remain nameless), participate in something called, co-packing. Co-packing is essentially where a manufacturing plant produces a lot of similar products for different companies (in this case, dog food). Why is co-packing bad? By co-packing, companies lose control over
their recipes, safeguards and quality controls. They are subject to the decisions that the staff at the manufacturing plant makes on their behalf. If the manufacturing plant were to run out of an ingredient in a pet food manufacturer’s recipe, they would make changes to the recipe as they see fit based on what they have on hand. Do you see where this can be problematic with regards to quality control as well as to the fact that you really don’t know what your dog is getting in it’s food (despite the label)?

With HORIZON, you don’t have to worry about that at all! What’s on the label is what your dog is getting! In addition to owning their own manufacturing facility, they are also a certified human grade food production facility. They source ALL of their own ingredients locally from Canada and make it a point to know ALL of their suppliers personally (that way they know how all the food animals are raised, fed, etc…). In addition, all of their ingredients are rigorously tested before they are used in the food.Do you see why we love HORIZON so far? It gets even better though…let’s get into the nutrition of it all!

HORIZON makes 4 different products, three of which, are GRAIN FREE! We have chosen only to carry the grain free products at AFF since we believe that grains should have little to no role in your pet’s nutrition! The grain free foods Horizon makes are called: Pulsar, Legacy and Amicus. Amicus is formulated specifically for small dogs and we don’t carry it currently but can special order it!

PULSAR

Pulsar is the combination of single source proteins (chicken or salmon) with ‘Pulses’ as the primary carbohydrate source (pulses are the edible seeds of legume plants – in ths case, red lentils and peas). Horizon has taken grain free food formulation to the next level by making it low on the glycemic index (GI) through the use of Pulses but EASY on the pocketbook. Glycemic index (GI) is a ranking of carbohydrates on a scale from 0 to 100, according to the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after eating. Low GI improves glucose and lipid levels in those with diabetes, helps control weight because it helps mitigate appetite and dietary hunger and also reduces insulin and insulin resistance. Low GI foods contribute to overall health and pulses are some of the lowest GI foods! The lower the Gl, the better the food is for minimizing spikes in blood sugar levels (in all animals, not just diabetic animals). In addition to red lentils and peas being low on the glycemic index, they also add an additional nutritional punch by enhancing digestibility through superior dietary fiber and increasing the overall antioxidant qualities to help fend off dangerous toxins your pet encounters in it’s environment.

It’s also uses legumes as it’s carbohydrate source which also makes it a low glycemic food choice!
